We spent a long good weekend in Chicago. Sunday was the “Bike the Drive” event, where the city closes Lake Shore Drive to cars and allow bicycles to use the road….. as it should be of course…. all the time..Opening our windows on Sunday morning, a beautiful day, Lake Michigan shining silver and gray..Lincoln Park in full bloom..and..what’s that? No noise from traffic on the Drive! Just..bicycles. What a beautiful site. And I had one of those “moments” where the future seems to dip in and say, “SEE?” Gas IS $5 a gallon now, and the people who had to have the vinyl clad McMansionette 45 miles one way from their gig in the financial services slaughter pen (which is where America’s Industry has gone..we don’t make anything, don’t create anything….we pass paper to each other and hopefully make $0.0025 on each pass) will start to wonder..”when will this get back to normal”? Ain’t a gonna happen Bob. Say boy howdy to the Gnu Normal.
O’course we COULD be one of them godless socialist/communist places (as someone actually said at a dinner in our house a while back..no kiddin) and then gas would be $9 a gallon cause o’ all the taxes them communists foolishly pay to their Big Guvmint..where they get that free medical stuff and free education.
unfortunately (fortunately??) we will be paying that soon enough….and still have to pay the middlemen who pass the paper from their desk to another..for the shite medical “care” we get ..as well as the “no chiles leff behine” excuse for an education that goes on here….Barack has an almost (I don’t think it is “almost” though..I think it is an..) insurmountable task ahead of him.
Rena and I took a long walk Sunday..6 or 7 miles..around our “new” neighborhood. We went to the bird sanctuary at Montrose Harbor (so I could take even more terrible pictures with my cel phone..) and in the parking lot of the harbor, as Lawyer Bob and Subdivision Sprawl (that’s “SS” to you!) Karl and their ugly overweight wives were a chewin’ on bar b que cow aboard their impressive “day” yachts.. I got another little jolt into the not so distant future..and fortunately for YOU, I took this picture:
That’s a Hummer “H2″ next door…
Not that I think a Smart Car, which looks to have all the practicality of any other fashion statement, is going to solve anything..but it just looked like… the immediate future..except the Hummer would be rusting in a cul-de-sac in some abandoned “lifestyle” subdivision..
walking..good.
biking …good.

I love mass transit, and like to ride the train when I go into Dallas on the weekend.
used to be, the weekend train was a fairly solitary experience.
Now it’s packed.
The change is a’comin’. Painful at first, because we frittered instead of planning.
